What is a Doula?

A birth doula provides continual physical, emotional and informational support to a couple during labour and birth. She supports the decisions a mother makes, and works with the couple to make the birth experience both positive and rewarding.

I think one of the best things we could do would be to help women/parents/families discover their own birth power, from within themselves. And to let them know it's always been there, they just needed to tap into it.

A little about me:

Terri Carroll

I have always been intrigued with midwifery and the birth process. When I discovered Doulas I thought it would be a great way to enter and gain experience in the birthing community.

Many moms have shared stories with me regarding disappointment in their birth and/or lack of support system. It became a passion of mine to change this disappointment into a positive, memorable and empowering experience.

In February of 2011, I completed the DONA (Doulas of North America) training program. I have assisted several families as they made their transition into parenthood.

Hearing the little one's first cry or parents say "Thank you, we couldn't have done it without you" is extremely rewarding for me.

Would having a doula replace my partner?Birth can be overwhelming and some partners have a hard time recalling the information they were given in their prenatal classes or pregnancy books. As a Doula, I am there to lend support to the partner just as much as the laboring woman. My role is to help partners be physically and emotionally present to the mother and the birth of their child.I plan to use medication, can I still benefit from having a doula?Whether your labor and birth includes medication or other pain coping practices, your need for support and encouragement continues. I am here to support you, your educated and informed choices- your ideal birth as you define it. Do Doulas give medical advice or perform medical tasks?I do not perform medical tasks or offer medical advice. My role is to assist you in gathering information so that you can make informed choices, during pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum period. Do you have backup in case you cannot make it to the birth?I work with another trusted doula. In the rare case she is also unavailable; there are many other experienced and certified doulas who are more than willing to help out. Rest assured that no matter what instances occur, I will ensure there will be a doula to support you and your partner during your labour and birth.
